The OBA – The Party of Common Sense

By February 6, 2024February 7th, 2024No Comments

Common sense is not all that common. This seems to describe today’s political landscape more than not.

But this isn’t the case with the One Bermuda Alliance and this week, our leader Jarion Richardson, along with fellow OBA parliamentarians and candidates is taking our message on the road.

The country has been asking for the OBA’s vision, what we would do if we were the Government. Bermuda, here is your chance to find out what we have to say on the economy, education, healthcare, housing and a host of kitchen table issues that concern you the voting public.

But more than anything else you will be exposed to and enlightened by a generous portion of common sense.

Isn’t it common sense to implement amendments in our legislation to ensure that any access tax revenue generated by this new Corporate Income Tax, be set aside for debt reduction and infrastructure improvements?

Isn’t it common sense to eliminate the sugar tax, that although unveiled with lofty intentions of influencing more healthy choices, has increased the cost of our groceries especially to a sector within our community who can least afford it?

Isn’t it common sense when creating a truly independent authority for tourism or education, that it be free of political interference? That its board members and chairman not be elected members of Parliament?

The Opposition Leader has been emphasising the point that Government leadership, in whatever form it takes, should get back to basics.

Here’s what he means by that.

How about driving your car on Bermuda roads without having to brace yourself every 20 yards for a shock to your system due to gigantic potholes.

How about neatly trimmed roadside trees and hedges that will prevent near-miss accidents?

How about the processing of work permits, issuance of passports and the delivery of death certificates in a timely fashion?

Are these ideas earth shattering? Of course not, ladies and gentlemen. It’s about getting back to basics; it’s about running a country with a healthy dose of common sense.

Bermuda is begging for it.
