Party Leader Announces His Resignation

When I first accepted the role of Party Leader and Opposition Leader in August 2023, I spoke about principled conduct, community problem-solving, and the dangers of cynicism in our politics. I said then that we needed less street-fighting and more nation-building. I still believe that.

Today, I write to inform you that I will step down as Leader of the Opposition and Party Leader of the One Bermuda Alliance effective September 6, 2025. I will, however, remain a Member of Parliament representing the people of Paget West.

This decision is the product of long reflection. I have served during a time of unprecedented institutional imbalance. The realities of supermajority governance demanded that we move quickly, structurally, and relentlessly—not simply to oppose, but to rebuild the very function of democratic opposition in Bermuda.

And we did it! Together, we launched the most comprehensive internal reform and policy development process the party has seen. We reintroduced real platforms, ran open town halls, expanded civic engagement, and held seats through challenging by-elections. We presented the public with substance, not slogans.

But leadership practically carries a real weight. It touches every corner of one’s life—family, health, friendships, and peace. With the support of my parliamentary colleagues and party officials, I have carried that weight, and believe the next phase of our journey requires a different pace and new energy. Our reforms have allowed us an opportunity for a planned and principled leadership transitions, marking our institutional maturity. That is something worth celebrating.

Our party will continue to represent those who believe in a politics rooted in truth, transparency, and trust. The political fight in Bermuda is for the future of this country. For its ability to govern itself fairly. For its young people to see politics as a calling, not a performance.

In my first speech as Opposition Leader, I said that Government is not for preening or settling scores. Government is for education, infrastructure, and public trust. Those words remain my compass. They will guide my continued work as a Member of Parliament and as a citizen.

I thank my colleagues for their commitment, my family for their sacrifice, and our community for its trust. It has been an honour to lead. It will now be my honour to support the transition to new leadership—and to continue serving Bermuda in the work that lies ahead.

Yours sincerely,

Jarion C. Richardson, JP, MP
Leader of the Opposition (until 6 September 2025)
