Final Ministerial Statement -St Georges Development Site
Mr. Speaker, on the 22nd October of this year the Ministry of Tourism Development & Transport released a media statement updating the public on the progress with regards to the St. George’s Tourism Development Site. The statement also advised on the Government’s decision to extend the exclusivity period with Desarrollos Hotelco Group (Desarrollos), the developer selected to build and operate a luxury resort on the 125 acre St. George’s property, for a further sixty (60) days, expiring on 13th December, 2014.
Port Royal Golf Course Failures
The Auditor General’s Report into the then-Government’s handling of the upgrade of the Port Royal Golf Course was hair-raising stuff.
Many of the checks and balances the Government has carefully put into place over the years to oversee the spending of public money on large public projects went out the window. The PLP Government had to change the law in order to give oversight of the project to the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Tourism instead of the Ministry of Public Works.
The fly in the deep sea mining ointment
Glen Smith, JP, MP, is a One Bermuda Alliance parliamentarian
My colleague Mark Pettingill said in the House of Assembly last week that the Opposition was a party full of ideas, but not solutions.
He was talking about their championing of deep sea mining, which they claim is “an opportunity to add millions of dollars to our economy and assist in paying down the national debt all while protecting existing jobs and creating new opportunities for Bermudians,” as Shadow Minister of the Environment Glenn Blakeney put it.
